Let's Talk About Falls...
When a 55+ person falls their hospital stay is two times longer than being admitted for any other reason. The impact on the US healthcare system is in the billions of dollars.
Statistics from the CDC and NIH state that falls are among the leading causes of death among people 65+…two thirds of those who fall will do so again within six months…one fourth suffering hip factures will die within six months of the injury…and the risk of falling increases with age.
The fear of falling among seniors is indeed a major concern, as it can lead to a cascade of negative consequences, both physical and psychological. When a senior survives a fall but experiences a loss of function associated with independent living, it can trigger feelings of depression, sadness, and hopelessness. This decline in mental health can exacerbate the physical decline, creating a vicious cycle that further diminishes their quality of life.
While many factors contribute to falls some of the most common reason are: diminished proprioception (sense of body positioning in space), diminished eye sight, hearing and reflexes, Sarcopenia (age related decline in muscle mass), certain medical conditions and medications that can cause dizziness and confusion and unsafe conditions in the home. Most of the contributing factors can be managed and alleviated with regular, specific exercise to increase strength, improve motor skills, balance and coordination. Furthermore while “No Fall Fitness” is exactly that, our programming also includes what to do if you fall
